CONDOR HUASI

The condor´s house

In 1995, Fernando Polanco and his uncle Galo Plaza met Friedman and Heide Köster, a couple of German biologists dedicated to animals’ rescue. They took care of two condors by then. After getting to know the Rinconada de San Pedro, located inside Hacienda Zuleta, they created an aviary for both birds and others that would continue coming. Thanks to the donation of private companies and monetary contributions, the cages that currently house ten condors were built.

Since 2010, Cóndor Huasi has been part of the National Andean Condor Working Group (Grupo Nacional de Trabajo del Cóndor Andino), alongside other organizations across the country dedicated to implementing actions for the rescue, care, and breeding of condors that are injured or living in poor captive conditions. At the same time, educational and awareness programs are carried out with local communities to improve the survival opportunities of condors living in the wild.

Currently, two breeding pairs of condors live in the project’s aviary: Ayu and Inti, and Coya and Tarishka. Together, they have successfully brought eight condors into the world. One of them, Wuakcha, represented a challenge for the FGPL team, as her parents had to be separated, leaving her egg—and later the chick—in the care of her father. You can read the full story in this document.
