MONITORING SPECTACLED BEARS
The spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus) is the only bear species in South America. Its population is at risk in Ecuador, and its exact number is unknown. We are part of the organizations that contribute to the conservation of the species by monitoring the local population with camera traps and through educational and outreach activities.
Each bear has a unique marking on its face, which allows for its identification. Since the project began, we have recorded more than 70 individuals.
